Day 3: Our Best Santa's - 12 Days of Christmas
We sat down and recorded 12 episodes all about Christmas. Our favorite Christmas movies, our favorite Santas, our worst Santas, the soundtracks we love. A little insight into who we are and what we actually care about this time of year.
You’d think picking the best Santa would be easy. It’s not. Turns out everyone has wildly different Santa baggage. Some want wholesome. Some want gritty. Some want claymation. And some of us pick Paul Giamatti because we forgot how much we liked Fred Claus until we rewatched it.
Movies in This Episode
- Fred Claus
- Miracle on 34th Street
- Frosty the Snowman
- The Santa Clause
- Noelle
Favorite Clips / Favorite Scenes
Fred Claus – Katie
Katie's all about Paul Giamatti’s exhausted, real-world Santa. She loves that he’s stressed, has high blood pressure from eating cookies, and basically acts like every parent the week before Christmas. And the brother dynamic with Vince Vaughn is what sold her. She wants a Santa with a little baggage and this one delivers.
Miracle on 34th Street – John
John loves realism. Ryan hates realism. He’s into the idea that Santa could just be this normal guy insisting he’s the real thing. The Dutch scene gets him emotional and the remake with the deaf girl sealed it. And once he learned Edmund Gwynn won an Oscar, that was it. John treats this Santa like a national treasure.
Frosty the Snowman – Erica
Erica grew up on Christmas claymation, so this Santa hit her right in the childhood. She loves the greenhouse moment where Santa saves Frosty and the whole emotional swing of the scene. Finding out the voice actor was the Haunted Mansion guy just made her double down on it. Comfort Santa energy. That’s her lane.
The Santa Clause – Ryan
Who doesn't love a little Tim Allen? The grunts, the moans, the pointing. He looks rough-sh, but he's underneath, he's gentle and caring. Noelle is a close second to Tim but we'll talk about that when they talk Christmas romance.

What is up everybody? This is Ryan from TMC, the movie club podcast. You are listening to the 12 Days of Christmas. We sat down and recorded 12 episodes just for you, all about Christmas. Anyhow, we hope that you enjoy it and we hope that you will share it.
This is episode...
podcast for people that
Movie.
It's the gift
Speaker 3 (00:37.752)
that keeps on giving the whole year.
Speaker 3 (00:52.974)
Merry Christmas. Ho, ho, ho. All right, so best Santa.
Santa and Katie who's your best Santa?
Okay, so I have Paul Giamatti in Fred Klaus. Have you guys ever seen that?
That's with Vince Vaughn,
Which we don't like Vince Bob, we determined that earlier.
Speaker 2 (01:18.286)
Oh, well, yeah, my sister hates it. I like forgot how much I liked that movie, though. I recently like rewatched it because I was like struggling to figure out which Santa I really liked.
Are you ready for that? Okay.
Review those files, okay? huh. BAM! Nice. Fat is w-
The kid strikes you as naughty? Stampin' Yep. Really motivated.
BAM!
Speaker 2 (01:45.322)
So, okay, first of all, Paul Giamatti's voice, just really like. He's got a good voice. So Vince Vaughn plays his brother, Fred, and it's like, takes place, it shows you their whole lives where when he was born and kind of how their relationship got messed up because he was such a saint, and it kind of made his brother seem like less than, basically, so they weren't close.
But he needs money and he makes them come work at the North Pole and like they kind of like rekindle their relationship and everything. But I like Paul Giamatti because I feel like it's like a modern Santa and he's very realistic. Like in it they talk a lot about like how he has like really high blood pressure and he's not doing very well because he eats too many cookies.
So he's not a classic Santa. No.
Have you ever seen Miracle on 34th Street?
original or why are you ruining my no I'm just asking you what does it have to do with mine
Speaker 3 (02:46.574)
Buddy, back off!
Right, cause you think that's the best Santa?
No, that's not the reason why because the reasons why you picked Paul Giamatti have to do with why why I picked that one
Then you can bring that up later. Okay, go for it. Yes, I have seen that.
thought this
Speaker 3 (03:05.966)
Go ahead, John, who's your best Santa? Let me tell you my best Santa.
what just so happens to be a
Speaker 4 (03:13.358)
Didn't mean to step on your best and I just thought that ours were similar is that the realism is what stood out Yeah to me. So my best Santa was the Santa from Miracle on 34th Street, of course
I just asked you that and you said no.
No, you me something different. What did you ask me specifically?
You
Bye.
Speaker 3 (03:32.726)
Definitely not.
Is your Santa from Miracle on 34th Street?
And I said no? Yeah. Okay, I did not hear you then. The thing I love about the miracle on 34th Street Santa is that there is a realism to it. He's a mall Santa Claus. It's all about this little girl who doesn't believe in Santa and he just keeps insisting that he is and then there's a lot of that. I think she's Dutch or something so she doesn't speak English and I thought this was so wholesome so I'm gonna play this clip.
I'm sorry she doesn't speak English. She's Dutch. She just came over. She's been living in an orphan's home in Rotterdam ever since. we've adopted her. I told her you wouldn't be able to speak to her, but when she saw you in the parade yesterday, she said you were Santa Claus, as she calls you, and you could talk to her. Well, I didn't know what to do. Hello.
Speaker 3 (04:29.888)
I am Cindy Claus.
Okay,
I think that might be my favorite Santa now.
Ha ha ha ha ha ha ha
Are you making fun of me?
Speaker 1 (04:40.62)
I'm serious. OK, that's a good Santa. She's right. I saw the movie, but is it.
So here's
I also want to... I also...
That's
So lovable though. There's another one, by the way, I was looking up scenes from Miracle on 34th Street, which I haven't watched in a while. So I had to look stuff up. There was another one from the remake, which was done, I think in the mid 90s, where a deaf kid sits on his lap. the mom, I think she adopted the child and she puts him on his lap and says, I'm so sorry she's deaf. But she knows you can't communicate with her, but you can kind of like, she just wanted to meet you. And all of sudden he starts communicating with her and he asks her.
Speaker 4 (05:21.58)
her name and he's signing to her and she signs back and it is the most wholesome scene ever.
was my favorite, Santa.
It is.
It is the most wholesome. I love it. So I also want to play for you before we move on with any commentary. The clip that I didn't know this by the way when I picked him, I just grew up with this movie. What I didn't know is that he won best supporting actor for his portrayal of Santa Claus.
movie? my gosh. How?
Speaker 1 (05:51.618)
Who's the star if he was a-
his name is Edmund Gwynn which I did not know this movie's from like 1947 or something it's a very old movie they remade it in 90s so here is part of his acceptance speech of when he won when he won best actor
Yeah.
Speaker 3 (06:13.282)
know there's a Santa Claus.
thing that's so great about the movie and then about the Santa is his entire purpose is there's a girl who just doesn't believe at all but also the mom of the girl is like no no no Santa Santa doesn't no no no honey Santa doesn't exist that kind of thing and he's just like no I am Santa and they haven't tested it so like for like to be mental and stuff
Yeah.
You've never seen either of the versions? No, you didn't see the 90s one? I've seen both of them. Yeah. Which one? I think growing up the 90s one because like as a kid.
Wait!
Speaker 4 (06:47.918)
Do you
Speaker 3 (06:53.943)
I'd have to watch it.
47 one is like so dated. It's tough. You know it's tough to get into because it know age it's aged But the story behind both is just it's a more wholesome view of Santa Claus right there's not the the then it's not so much the magic It's just like what it's This stuff. I just love it, so that's that's it Ryan
Bye.
Speaker 4 (07:19.756)
You go first, good. Erica, go, because I wrote a line.
Why are you not picking me? Because I don't have a clip?
No, because I have to get his clip.
Oh, right, right, right. OK, so I think that's my new favorite. But who? Because I also had a really hard time with this, Santa for me, Santa is who I grew to know, in my storybook the night before Christmas like that. And I don't know, I had to search and search and I'm like, no, these Sanas are they don't do it.
You can't
Speaker 4 (07:34.764)
Give
Speaker 2 (07:51.096)
They don't.
I'm NO!
Watch Marathon 34th Street. Captures the magic of Christmas in a way that I think you would really like.
Yeah, and I hope
Speaker 1 (08:02.574)
So anyhow, for my Santa, I picked the Santa and frosted the snowman.
Thank you.
I'm trying to think if I even remember. It's a cartoon!
He's the claymation singer
He's like,
Speaker 3 (08:15.34)
the guy with the red suit on
he's got claymation
and that Santa was not nice.
You're some mean Santa.
Frosty, rescues Frosty.
Speaker 1 (08:27.372)
Yeah, and... someone frosty when he's in the greenhouse and the girl's so sad because frosty melted. Because he's a puddle. I only took... I know. But then Sanic comes in...
She's gonna cry!
Maybe I should have sent you this clip, but he's like, no, this he was made with Christmas snow.
He was made with Christmas snow.
and finally opens the door!
Speaker 2 (08:55.778)
Me.
I've never, I don't know, I've never seen.
What was he made with yellow snow?
You
you
Speaker 4 (09:04.039)
That's what we used to call Christmas snow where I grew up.
So anyhow, that Santa is voiced by Paul Fries, who is also the voice in the Hornet Mansion ride. Really? That's so cool. So that's like a fun little fact that I found out. was trying to my Santa. He's the ghost host. Ghost host. Yeah, when you're waiting before you go on the ride.
a go.
Speaker 3 (09:26.51)
That was kind of a scary ride to the haunted the drop. Tower, tower, I'm thinking tower.
Haunted Mansion.
That's through the-
Like there is no drop in that ride
So they hang out frosty. That's a nice thing. like that Santa.
Speaker 3 (09:42.018)
I think we all had issues with this one because I had issues with mine. is hard. is. No, none of them are ugly.
Nobody can live up to
You're expecting.

Speaker 4 (11:21.016)

I liked him in in in this movie. However, the it's when you were talking about Your Santa, uh-huh that the sign language that Noel in Noel Yeah, she did the same thing in the homeless shelter and I just I love Noel, you know that
because it's anachondria.
Speaker 2 (11:47.018)
We know why you like Noel.
He was good. The movie was really good, but she did the same thing in the homeless shelter with that little girl. And I thought that that was Santa.
That part's awesome.
Speaker 4 (12:02.442)
I agree that the best Santa is Miracle in 35.
You
Speaker 3 (12:15.212)
